American Gods

I had very low hopes going in. The book was solid, but when you get into transcending the physical and start dealing with conceptual/symbolic imagery against the very familiar present day it almost always falls apart. It's hard to keep grounded and still give sufficient gravitas.

But yoooooooooo

The casting? On point.
Locations and sets? On point.
Music? On point.

I realize some changes are necessary from print to screen but it usually irks me when things go too far off course. Here? I approve of almost all of them. The pacing is solid. The only time the lights/colors aren't gorgeous is when you need to understand exactly how tired and drab something really is. They do a surprisingly good job of expressing temperature thru visuals, if that makes any sense. Gillian Anderson! Crispin Glover! Orlando Bloom I know better for comedy NAILS it. I've never seen Ian McShane in anything better. It's hard to say anything specific without spoilers (especially in the web of this story) but I'm very surprised and pleased.

It looks good, sounds good, draws you in, keeps you in anticip

-ation, then slowly burns you as a sacrifice. It's a damn good show.

I'm almost done with the book. And I just have to watch the last episode (I don't have HBO but I usually have a TV gathering with friends every sunday and we watch certain shows like this. Sadly their TV has died and I was gone on the night of the finale thus why I haven''t watched it yet)

LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS, I love the direction they took story wise VS the book, love the cast. (Pornstach as Sweeny is spot on and my favorite, followed my Ms, Media and Mr World)

Spoiler:
Hard to say much of anything without it being at least a small spoiler.

I particularly like Salim's expanded role! This show has few genuinely good characters. Shadow's one, but even he's cynical as hell. Can't really fault him, but it's nice to have someone who genuinely hasn't hurt and isn't out to hurt anybody. It kinda balances the palette against the rest of the morally grey backdrop. Wouldn't have seen that change coming as it's such a brief flash in the book, but I approve. And I like what he brings to the chemistry of that trio.

Spoiler:
I definitely like the direction they're taking with Laura/Sweeny drive along tour. The book just barely gives you anything to think about Laura other than that she saves Shadow in just the right places. Just in the nick of time all the way to the end more or less. I like that you get to know more about her in the show and where her brain is part of the time even if I can't stand her being an absolute cunt. And I love the interaction between her and Sweeny.
